About Us
Serbs arrived to the St. Louis area in the mid 19th century. They first came from Marindolska Krajina in Slovenia. Later, they came
from Hercegovina, Bosnia, Lika, Kordun, Banija, Dalmacija, Slavonija, Srem, Banat, Backa and Baranja. Others came from
Montenegro and, in some cases, from the Kingdom of Serbia itself.
They spent their spare time within the Serbian community and formed a singing society,, called "Gusle." They also participated in
organizations of a national spiritual and cultural nature. Eventually, all saw the need to bind the Serbs into a single church
organization. An Assemblage was held July 18, 1909 unanimously organizing the Serbian Orthodox Church-School Parish of Holy
Trinity, St. Louis, Missouri.
World War I, the years from 1912-1918 strengthened the liberation and unity of all Serbs. Many went on the battlefield as volunteers
(about 250 strong), and gave their lives and blood to perpetuate ideals of Freedom.
In 1922, additional land was added to the Mount Hope Cemetery, which had been founded in 1914.
In 1927, Misho Boskovich organized the Sloboda Orchestra.
The Kolo Sestara was organized in 1928 and it's first President was Dragica Maravich.
In 1928, Serbs erected the Serbian Orthodox Church "Holy Trinity" - on McNair and Geyer. It was consecrated in May, 1929.
During World War II, 163 young men of the church served in the armed forces of the United States.
After the war, a new church hall was built. It was consecrated on August 26, 1947 by Bishop Dionisije of the American-Canadian
Diocese.
